Accounting Manager (CONTRACT)
You are a hands-on Accounting Manager who thrives in a mission-driven nonprofit environment and enjoys owning day-to-day accounting operations while helping build structure, transparency, and scalable processes. You’re comfortable getting into the details, partnering with non-finance teams, and supporting an organization that values collaboration, service, and continuous improvement.
This position pays: $40–$50/hour depending on experience
Location: Richmond, CA
What you will be doing:
- Manage daily accounting operations including AP, AR, bank reconciliations, and expense coding
- Own month-end close, including journal entries and account reconciliations
- Maintain accurate general ledger records in QuickBooks (Online preferred)
- Prepare monthly financial reports, cash flow forecasts, and supporting schedules
- Oversee and support bi-weekly payroll in coordination with HR; serve as backup payroll administrator as needed
- Review and submit payroll and 401(k) filings; support year-end payroll activities including W-2s
- Track restricted grants and contracts; support grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance
- Assist with annual budgeting and ongoing reforecasting
- Monitor program and project spending against budgets and communicate variances to stakeholders
- Prepare audit schedules and documentation for the annual audit and Form 990
- Support compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Help improve finance systems, procedures, and internal reporting tools as the team evolves
- Build strong, service-oriented relationships with internal teams and external vendors
What you bring:
- 5+ years of accounting or finance experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred)
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, grant accounting, and audit preparation
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, Excel, and Google Workspace
- AP-heavy background with comfort managing vendor relationships and high transaction volume
- Payroll exposure, including coordination with HR and benefits providers
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage workload independently
- Flexible, adaptable mindset — comfortable figuring things out as processes evolve
- Service-oriented approach with a collaborative, transparent working style
